HOW TO PLAY

Set Up the Game

Start by separating the cards into four distinct piles:

  • Identity cards (who you are)
  • Situation cards (what’s happening)
  • Question cards (what you need to consider)
  • Conversation cards (how others can join the discussion)

Shuffle each pile separately.

Then, deal each player a number of Conversation cards equal to the number of people playing. (For example, if there are 4 players, each person gets 4 Conversation cards.)

Place the remaining cards—Identity, Situation, Question, and any leftover Conversation cards—in separate stacks in the center of the table. This is your shared game area.

Now you're ready to begin.

Begin the First Round

To kick off the game, the first player draws an Identity card. This card describes the role they’ll take on for the round—someone with a specific background, perspective, or lived experience.

Read the Identity card aloud so everyone in the group knows who you’re stepping into.

For the rest of the round, you'll respond to the scenario and questions as if you are that person. It’s your job to try and see the world through their eyes.

Step Into the Scenario

Next, the same player draws a Situation card and reads it aloud. This card sets the scene—it describes a workplace moment or challenge that the identity you’ve just assumed is now facing.

Take a moment to imagine what it might feel like to navigate that situation from the perspective of your new identity. This is where the shift begins: you’re no longer responding as yourself, but as the person on your Identity card.

Respond and Reflect

Now, draw a Question card. This card offers a prompt to help guide your thinking—asking you to consider things like identity, relationships, workplace culture, or ethical impact.

Set a timer (or ask someone to be the timekeeper) for 1 minute. During that time, respond out loud to the question, explaining how you—as the person on your Identity card—would handle the situation.

This is your moment to step fully into someone else’s shoes. There’s no right answer—just an honest attempt to see things from a new point of view.

Join the Conversation

Now it’s time for group discussion.

Starting with the person to the left of the player, each person takes a turn playing one of their Conversation cards. Each card has a specific prompt—like “Say More,” “Consider This,” or “I Can Relate”—that invites deeper dialogue.

Use your card to build on the player’s response, ask a thoughtful question, or bring in a new perspective. The goal isn’t to debate or correct—it’s to explore, reflect, and connect.

Continue around the circle until everyone has played a card. Then move to the next round.
